Unique transforms former bus station into stunning student accommodation
Unique Window Systems have successfully fabricated and installed windows, doors and curtain walling for Lumis Student Living – a significant redevelopment of a former bus station site, located on Southgates, in the historic heart of Leicester.
Lumis comprises four buildings and is providing 567 student bedrooms, set around a shared courtyard. The scheme has been in close liaison with client Viridis Real Estate and CRM Student Management to optimise the potential of the site, ensuring the maximum number of units and providing a 50/50 mix of studios and cluster bed groups of varying sizes.
The windows and doors used are from aluminium specialists AluK, with the 58 BW window systems and the GT 55 commercial door carefully selected by our commercial team for the student accommodation project. The 58 BW window system was identified as the perfect choice and has been installed to offer a high performance, flexible system for the Lumis project. In addition to this, the GT 55 aluminium door system provides the ultimate combination of security and performance and also includes thermal break profiles for further enhanced performance.
The finished project will have a substantial amenity space, including social lounges, quiet study areas, meeting rooms, a gym, a multi-purpose area, a cinema room, a community kitchen and a managed laundry room. This provides an enhanced student offer as well as an active street frontage, forming a showcase for the development. These areas link to shared, central courtyard which acts as a social focus for all residents. The Lumis Student Living accommodation is situated within a five minute walking distance to De Montfort University and Leicester city centre, with Lumis set to officially open its doors in September 2017 in preparation for the new academic year.
