Unique contribute to TWO award-winning Leicester projects

Unique Window Systems has played a huge role in two different Leicester projects that have both been awarded construction prizes. The first project in question – a 19th Century Great Central Railway building – once facing demolition – has now won a Leicester Civic Society architecture award.

The former wagon repair works, off Upperton Road in Leicester, were transformed from dilapidation to a cycle store and coffee shop. Civic Society chairman Stuart Bailey said: “With closure of the railway in 1969 there was concern for the railway buildings.

“Despite being locally listed in 2011 the wagon works was subjected to severe criminal damage, clearly aimed at hastening its loss to allow redevelopment of a valuable site.

Bailey said: “The panel were immensely impressed by the high quality of the extremely complex structural work undertaken by Staniforth and RG+P Architects and their contractors.”

The society’s 2015 New Build Award goes to the New Galleries at the Attenborough Arts Centre, University of Leicester – another project Unique heavily contributed towards.

The redeveloped arts centre was opened in January by Sir David Attenborough and has proven to be highly successful for the University and the entire city of Leicester.

Mr Bailey said: “Externally unobtrusive, these contemporary art galleries put Leicester University and the city of Leicester at the forefront of modern art in the Midlands and are a fitting architectural tribute to Lord Attenborough, who was a Society member for many years.”
