Unique Window Systems have been awarded the contract to fabricate and install the windows, doors and curtain walling for iMET – a brand new £10.5 million learning centre.

Unique will be teaming up with Bond Bryan Architects as well as contractors Willmott Dixon to deliver the iMET (Innovation Manufacturing Engineering Technology) – a state-of-the-art educational facility that will act as a training concept to support growth and economic development in the East of England.

The iMET, located in Huntingdon between Cambridge and Peterborough, is currently under construction after being given the go-ahead in early 2016 and will be a major hub for the delivery of technical, advanced and higher vocational skills training in manufacturing, engineering and technology.

Unique’s commercial team that secured the contract decided that the Technal suite would be the most suitable system for the iMET project, with windows, doors and curtain walling from Technal set to be installed.

The windows will be from Technal’s SOLEAL range, which offers exceptional thermal, acoustic and weather performance. The SOLEAL window system is renowned as incredibly versatile, with a fresh and modern design – ideal for the contemporary and stylish plans by Bond Bryan for the iMET facility.

Unique will also be fabricating and installing Technal’s STII commercial door, offering a design suitable for high traffic commercial applications whilst maintaining the exceptional thermal performance expected by today’s standards. Finally, the MX curtain walling system from Technal will also be utilised; a system offering a fantastic performance in all commercial requirements, as well as an aesthetically pleasing design.

The two-storey building will bring together industrial-style workshops, laboratories and collaborative work environments. The double-height workshops are set to provide space for larger scale training and a further wing providing smaller scale delivery rooms and specialist laboratories. Between these a flexible collaboration space will provide opportunities for informal group and project work, as well as offering a venue for employer events.

Architects Bond Bryan, suggest the facility will be “driven by the desire to create a simple but distinctive contemporary building that reflects the underlying design. The design aims to create an economic and flexible solution that will nevertheless create a distinctive, high-quality addition to the campus that reflects the importance of the new facility”.

Work began on site in August 2016 with doors opening to students in September 2017.
